Exploring Simulator Game Concepts & Why They Work

For decades now, simulator games have been a relatively small but popular section of the gaming world. Within this bracket, you can find a whole host of intriguing ideas. The increasing quality of game design has meant that vehicle simulators are gaining traction; you can find anything from tractor and train simulators to car driving and long-distance flight simulators, for those people who fancy spending an entire day staring at a screen.

If you don’t have the luxury of time, or you would simply prefer to drive your actual car, this is really just the tip of the iceberg. For many people, the more pressing question revolves around the concept of simulator gaming ideas, why they work, and what their future might hold as we drift toward gaming innovations that could open a very interesting angle for simulators.

AI and VR are becoming significant factors in the future of this industry, so it’s not just the current market we’ll be looking at; we will see where the industry could be headed over the next decade, and whether simulator games have the capacity to challenge some of the most revered and popular gaming genres.

A Vicarious Approach To Gaming

We only have to take a step back and look at entertainment and gaming from many angles to get a good idea of why simulator games are so popular. Some of the most popular games of all time are free-roam games where you experience a world through the sole lens of the main protagonist. While simulator games operate across many sectors, there’s no gaming sector that is untouched by their influence.

The casino gaming market has long leaned on simulators to bolster its overall appeal. Many classic casino table games have demo versions people can try, but there are also virtual versions influenced by the rise of simulation games and ideas.

We have seen how conventional table games have a raft of different types. Although real money casino games make up the backbone of the market, we’ve seen how those who stream their casino gaming expertise on social media are able to develop an audience. In many ways, this can mimic the approach of simulators, allowing people to vicariously watch others play casino games and provide a simulator-style experience.

Fueling The Rise Of Online Communities

As you can see in the link below, gaming platforms use social media to expand their reach to the largest audience possible. Online communities have played a role in the growth of simulator games. Unlike prominent games in this genre like The Sims, which have the might of EA behind it, huge capital, and, at one point, a potential movie idea.

Many simulator games are created by enthusiasts online, often from scratch on very small budgets. It means that any design or idea with some traction will bring together an online community. Often, these quirky communities can help people find solace and like-minded people online, who they would otherwise struggle to find because of how niche their gaming preferences are.

Simulating Our Favorite Things

Animal simulator games are particularly popular, although they haven’t quite met the popularity of some of the most well-known simulator games like The Sims. So, if you fancy seeing what it’s like to live as a cat, there are a lot of Cat Simulator style games you can find online. In fact, you can find any animal simulator game online. Why do they work? Millions of us adore our pets.

Some people go one step further, playing games and buying merchandise to show their affection for their cuddly pets. It’s the same way sports games work: people want to play with their favorite sports teams and heroes, they want to emulate their achievements in a simulator, it can be a fun escape, a harmless experience, and while not all simulator games are engaging, it’s easy to see why they are so popular.

One Eye On The Future

Although some have questioned whether VR has long-term potential, there will still be plenty of room for innovation. Simulator games could be the main route VR and AI take to pique the interest of a much broader gaming market.

Now, that’s not to say it has legs. But if we look at how airplane simulators have gotten much more sophisticated, with much better graphics and detailed maps since the beginning of this decade, there’s been a surge in people buying VR headsets and simulating the entire experience, immersively.

You only need to browse YouTube to see there’s a market for it. If a game design company hits the jackpot with a VR simulator idea, it could be the golden ticket that brings it into the mass market, but even if this doesn’t happen, simulator games will continue to have an impact on the market for many years to come.
